The Biography of Triple Medal of Honor Winner
James Madison Cutts, Jr.

By Bing G. Spitler

Hero of the Republic
Hero of the Republic is the biography of a little known but gallant Union Officer, James Madison Cutts. This book documents Cutts' family history from their arrival in America in 1641 through his involvement in the Civil War to his death in 1903. He served from the beginning to the end of the Civil War and so distinguished himself in battle that his fellow soldiers came to call him "a hero of the Republic." Captain Madison Cutts (later Lt. Colonel) was recognized for gallantry at the Battles of the Wilderness, Spotsylvania and Petersburg. He was awarded his medal in 1891.

Author Bing Spitler began to research James Madison Cutts after reading a brief section in Carl Sandburg's biography, Abraham Lincoln: The Prairie Years - The War Years. Fascinated and curious about the life and times of this colorful character, Spitler spent 10 years conducting this original research.
